Ljubljana, 7 November (STA) - Daily Delo reiterates its endorsement of the border arbitration agreement between Slovenia and Croatia on Saturday [7 November], while also forecasting that in case of a referendum the majority of voters would share its opinion.
While pointing out that Delo's latest public opinion poll has suggested that the majority of Slovene voters would back the agreement in a referendum, the paper says that there are at least two basic reasons why the agreement deserves to be endorsed.
The first reason is that it is high time after almost 20 years that the unnecessary and sometimes even silly border issue be resolved, and the second the fact that no political player in the country has so far put forward any alternative that could even remotely compete with the solution proposal of PM Borut Pahor.
Pahor, who has along with the ruling coalition put on the line his entire political capital to achieve and confirm the agreement, has obviously claimed the first half of this extremely risky game.
While it is true that the toughest part is still ahead of him, he has so far managed to avoid any major political mistakes.
There was the minor mistake of failing to invite opposition leader Janez Jansa to join the project at the very outset, however Jansa is also holding an empty hand: he has no alternative to propose and in the meantime pressure (especially from abroad) to join Pahor will become fierce.
